  4. Week 11: Spirit Junkie.

We’re getting deep this week. Past the surface, beyond your ego, your spirit is in the spotlight.

Gabby Bernstein is a new age soul sista. She takes her lead from A Course in Miracles and Marianne WIlliamson, and leads the readers through their own journey towards “self-love and miracles” - if you can check your ego at the door and trust in the book’s exercises. She has a rocky past that led her to understand what’s real versus perceived, what parts of life we truly control, and how to live a life you love, free from fear and completely egoless.

    Sounds pretty great, right?

I’m fortunate enough to live and work in an environment where the ideas of A Course in Miracles and Spirit Junkie are a way of life - being egoless, powerful, having integrity with yourself, and exploring your true potential in life - so this book wasn’t so totally groundbreaking for me. That being said, I can say that I am writing from a place of truly understanding and living the material. It takes a high level of self-awareness for someone to pick up this book - to get the idea that hey, maybe I don’t know everything. Maybe there is more to life than the stories I create and the perspective from which I choose to live. On top of this, it takes bravery and a true commitment to stand for yourself and choose to develop into your best self, living your best life.

If you’re a new age young person, living life passionately and with an open mind, I recommend this book to you - you will enjoy it. On the other hand, if you don’t already identify yourself as someone who is living powerfully and fully, then you, dear reader, stand to grow immeasurably and see positivity and love abound in your life if you open yourself to a perspective such as this - I recommend this book especially to you.

    Live a life you love.

    Until next week,

    Sara

  8. Week 10: The Book of Awesome.

I didn’t write about this book at first because I figured that everyone I know had already read it (yes, it is that awesome); however, I went home for a visit last week and saw that my Mom had borrowed it from the library. So, in the spirit of Mother’s Day yesterday, the fact that people are still visiting libraries regularly, and this amazing book, this week is dedicated to The Book of Awesome.

Neil Pasricha was just your average fellow when he had an idea. After going through some tough times, he decided to create a blog to write out one awesome thing about life every weekday, starting at #1000 and counting down. Pretty simple, right? It struck a chord with readers and the blog exploded, leading to Book #1, Book #2, and the holiday version

It is basically a gratitude list - a tool to mindfully track the things in your life that you are grateful for, which keeps your mind on the positive aspects of your life. I have kept my book on my bedside table for months now, and every so often will read a few awesome things (I just flipped to “Gym Pain” - ohhhh how awesome it is). It is literally impossible to not crack a smile when reading.

If you can’t get your hands on the book, check out the official 1000 Awesome Things blog (which reached it’s 1000th thing just last month) and Neil’s TEDxToronto talk below.

Do you keep a gratitude list? What are your tricks for staying positive?

Sharing your ideas with the world for free on tumblr = awesome.

The sense of satisfaction after 10 weeks of blogging = awesome.

The fact that you, my friend, have read to the end of this post = awesome.

    Until next week,

    Sara

  9. Week 9: Moonwalking with Einstein.

“Imagine waking up tomorrow and discovering that all the world’s ink had become invisible and all our bytes had disappeared. Our world would immediately crumble. Literature, music, law, politics, science, math: Our culture is an edifice built of externalized memories.”

This week I cracked a new book written by author Joshua Foer. The strange name and cover made me pick it up off the shelf at Chapters, but the subtitle “The Art and Science of Remembering Everything” is what really had me intrigued.

So far, I’ve read about how Joshua stumbled upon the USA Memory Championships, and am about to delve into what his year of training his memory involved. I’m totally fascinated by what this could look like - how can a person really look at a randomly staked deck of cards and memorize the order perfectly in minutes!? (If you really want to know, watch this video of World Memory Champion Ben Pridmore doing just that.)

We all know the feeling of walking into a room and completely forgetting what we went there to get, and this book will hopefully shed some light on ancient techniques that relied on internal instead of external memory to retain memories, stories, history, and knowledge.

    Until next week,

    Sara

  13. Week 8: a wait.

    Hey friends and followers!

It’s moving day! Had a busier Monday than I expected - and with less Internet connectivity - so this week’s blog post will be a little delayed.

Pro: we won’t be setting up Internet for the summer in this apartment, so I’ll have lots of down time to catch up on my reading. ;)

    Expect a mid-week post.

    Thanks for following!

  14. Week 7: Are You Smart Enough to Work at Google?

What’s your instant reaction to this title? I was perusing online bookstores searching for some blog inspiration (predictable!), when I came across this gem. I can’t say that I have my career sights set on working at Google in particular, but I do believe in checking out any method that might provide an advantage in the New Economy – and this is definitely an interesting approach!
